Plant identification is much more than just trying to match a photo off the Internet, which can be dangerous and is not a risk you need to take! This overview will give you an awareness of the dozen most obvious and easy to spot plant features to start off your skill building for gathering wild foods for your table or just for identifying invasive species to remove from your yard.
Instructor majored in Plant Science at University of Guelph, is a 30+yr organic gardener, and has been foraging locally for years.
Shelley currently lives on a small hobby farm in an area where the power goes out often. She has been canning for her family for over a decade, motivated by food sensitivities of her children and concerns about "extra" ingredients in store-bought products. Her 30+ years as an organic gardener started as an adversity to spraying chemicals on food plants, and led her into taking plant science at a top rate post secondary school. Continuing to learn and expand her abilities, she spent 5 years training with the Army Reseves, took a Wilderness Survival Course, portaged Algonquin park, and was a Scouting leader for many years. By continuing to add home skills to her day-to-day living, foraging was an easy next step to her self-reliance goal. She lives this lifestyle everyday, and what started out as teaching these skills to friends and neighbours has become an enjoyable and satisfying hobby of creating courses and sharing her knowledge and experience.
